WHAT IS POETRY????


poetry! some will have different defenitions for it, but i think, generally its a short piece of imaginative writing, of a personal nature and laid out in lines. this is not about the definition of poetry, but trying to understand who exactly should be called a poet, and their names heralded in the same breath as that of the feelah sista, flo, afurukan, masoja msiza and many other prominent poets. this has come to my attention after i have attended poetry sessions(only as an audience), in and around my campus. some guys are very good and i wish i can mention their names, but there are also those who are so wack, you can see that they dont even read. what kind of a poet that doesn't read? i think some of these people are doing it because they think its an in-thing and also perceive it as a fashion statement. belive me, i'm not saying people should not explore their talents, but shouldn't poetry come to you? shouldn'nt it be something that you feel? shouldn't it be something you feel incomplete without? especially, us as africans we should know this because in our very communities we know traditional praise singers(iimbongi zomthonyana), people who just burst in and do their thing without even preparing it because its something that comes naturally to them and they are feeling it (thats what i call true freestyling), but guys my question still stands, who should be called a poet?

IS THIS A GOOD HOME?

being black is being rooted in Africa.where one can trace their roots to the days when black people were kings of their land.when everyone was blood related and ubuntu did not need to be defined. cos we all knew what it meant and it came naturally to those born in afrika.these days some black people are not afrikan.being afrikan is more than just being black,it is about having pride in who you are as a man or woman. It is about not being ashamed of bearing the scares you have.you can define black as a colour but you cannot define black as a culture,we are too complex for any philosiphor to even think of ever trying to understand.a true afrikan does not need to define his/her existance,trying to give what they are an english name. we are the original decendance of the people of christ.the first race to evolve into a civilised people.we were the first to study physics,astrology,mathematics,medicine. brothers and sistas dare not define what is being black ,look deep inside and you will find the answer and when you do,do not share it with anyone else.cos it sacred to you and only you
